What happens when a Director directs themselves ?

when being your own actor you need one of if not all three things.

1 the ability to look at your performance without ego.
a This works because
b This stinks because

you have to be able to step outside yourself and observe dispassionatly.

2 An honest informed audience or other observer to give feedback. Someone or a group the opinion of you can trust, even if you disagree.

3 Time: If you can create something, shelf it for a few months forget about it then go back and rewatch it....... That distance gives you perspective.

another trick is the cup shuffle.

Have you ever taken a drink of milk thinking it was a diet soda?

Or put in the wrong tape and walked back into the room while distracted by something else?

if just telling people what it is your going to do or what is going to happen is directing then everybody would be doing it

Im after a very very distinct performance, and its up to myslef as one as an actor to give that performance and two as a director to get that performance

I have directed myself a few times, but that is always in the situation were i can't get someone that fits the part, and all my characters are derived from a certain side of me, so I can play them if need be. Also I am convinced that you make a better director if you are a good actor. But not neccessarily vis versa.

Hey there.

Woody Allan anyone? Charlie Chaplin? Shit even Kevin Smith does it. I would have though you just need a camera operator you can trust. That or just lock the camera down. Get a stand in to erm.... Stand in while you frame the shot. Then take his place. Call action. (you do trust people to press record on the camera. Dont you?) Do your shit. Call cut. Play back the shot. like it/hate it and continue arcordingly.

I admit Ive never done it. B ut can it be that hard?

I've done it. Yes Despin it really is quite simple. I can't understand all this stuff about not "trusting" the camera op. You guys are so precious! I wonder would your crew be so eager to work with you if they knew the contempt you hold them in. Go on, hand over the camera for a few shots, you might actually learn something! Even if its just how shoddy an actor you are...

Incidentally I never watch a shot after I shoot it. Seems to break timecode.
